A Disastrous Hurricane.
LOSS CF LIFE AND PROPERTY (Per Press Association.) A ucKLAND, This Day. The Ohau, from Fiji, brings news of tbe destruction by a hurricane there on January 7th and Bth of five churches in Suva — the Presbyterian, Wesleyan, Native, and Polynesian. The Church of England collapsed entirely. The Roman Catholic structure came off with very little damage. Government experienced considerable j loss in the destruction of tbe Custom House and bonded store. The stores and warehouses of the larger merchants came off best. The patients and attendants at the hospital had a bad time. The Holmhurst sugar estate estimates its loss at i-1500. The cocoanut plantations on the Island are ruined. At Levuka the barque Ophir was wrecked on a reef. The barque Dione from Africa had her masts cut away, which saved her from foundering. Several small crafts were driven to sea. A native village at Übucka was blown to pieces. The cutters Shark and Eleanor and a schooner unknown foundered off Taviuni. j It is believed all the crews were lost.
