Wanganui Education Board.

The Board resumed yesterdaj iTuesdaj) morning. Present— Messrs John Notman (chair), Baker. Sanson. Carson, Bridge, Fry Hurley and Rev. J Ross,. , Catholic Schools— His Grace Arclibishop Redwood wrote making a request, in accordance with the Act, that the Catholic schools should be placed under examination by the Board's inspectors. The chairman warmly supported the proposal and moved that the request be granted. Mr Carson seconded the motion. — Mr Sanson opposed the proposal.—He thought that before they undertook the responsibility they should consult the inspector, and ask him whether he could undertake the work. — Mr Bridge though with Mr Sanson that they had no right to take upon themselves to authorise their inspectors to inspect the Catholic schools. — Mr Carson, in supporting the proposal, said that so far as the inspector's burden was concerned, that was a separate matter, as if the work became too much, it was the Board's duty to provide him adequate assistance. — Mr Fry opposed the motion on the ground that it "would entail too great a responsibility in providing for the examination of all private schools — Messrs Baker and Hurley supported the motion. — The motion was then put and carried by 6 to 2 : — " That a reply be sent to the Catholic Archbishop of Wellington agreeing to undertake the inspection of Catholic schools in this district." Rangiwahia — A letter was received from Mr Moffatt re the removal of the Pemberton school. After discussion a motion in favor of the removal being proceeded with as soon as possible, was lost, the opinion of the majority of members being that it should not be hurried Tiritea— A letter was read enclosing an offer from the Chief Justice, Sir James Prendergast, to transfer a site for this school free of cost. — Referred to Mr Fry, and it was resolved that a letter be sent to Sir James Prendergast thanking him for his offer. Waituna— A letter was received from the chairman of the committee complaining of the smallness of the schoolhouse, aud offering to vest an acre of land in a suitable place and also to give the present building free of cost, providing the Board would remove it to the site referred to and enlarge it to meet the requirements. It was resolved that Mr Wilson be thanked for his offer, but informed that the Board cannot see their way to accept it, as they intend to wa.it until the school at Waitapu, now in course of erection, has been in existence six month, so as to see what effect it would have on Waituna. Bunny thorpe — The report of Messrs Bridge and Fry, with referen.ee to the purchase of a site at Bun.uyfch.orpe, waa road and adopted. The Chairman reported that resolutionNo. 1 of the Executive Committee's recommendation had been agreed to. Resolution No. 2 was amended by the substitution of the following figures :— The secretary to receive i' 375 annually," from the. School additions — Mr Atkins, the Board's architect, submitted plans for • proposed additions to the Mangatoki, , Apiti, Feilding, and Marton schools, and, after discussion it was resolved that the work at Apiti be proceeded with, the other schools being held over for the present. _ ...
