American Politics.
Au American Senator, speaking at a dinner after the recent Republican triumphs at the elections, is reported thus : " The days of the politicians is gone. The politicians ain't in it any more. Give us honesty at the ballotbox and the people'll do the rest. The politicians didn't have anything to do with the result o' the lasfc election. D'ye want to know what did '? I'll tell yer : In 1891, when the working man came home Saturday night au' dropped his wages in his wife's lap, she went an' paid the butcher's bill an' the grocer's bill an' the baker, an' she had somethin' left for herself. They went t 1 church the next day an' worshipped God, an' their children were happy an' had good shoes an' warm clothes. This year, after two years o' Democratic rule, the cupboards are empty, the good wife can't buy clothes, the children are hungry, an' their cries tear the hearts o' their parents — these same people that three years ago had aplenty. Yes, fellow citizens, these same workin' people was walkin' around with wrinkles in their stomachs. That's what done it, fellow citizens."
