(Per s.s. Manapouri at the Bluff.) Melbourne, January 4. The Colonial Treasurer has^ in his office, says the Sydney Telegrapb, two bottles of spirits. One is brandy, the other gin. The liquor, which was sent from abroad, was, on arrival, subjected to analysis. The brandy was found to be unfit for human consumption. Its intrinsic value is 4d a gallon. The colour is slightly darker than that of the genuine article, though the label itself is sufficient to warn off any purchaser. The bottle is branded with three stars. An analysis of the gin proves it to be worth 2s per gallon. It is stamped " Prirue Old Tom," and bails from Germany. " There is nothing in the Analyst's report that would enable us to condemn the spirit," said Mr Reid. The duty on the article is 14s per gallon, or seven times its actual value. ; H.M.S. Penguin arrived at Townsville on Wednesday from the South Seas for coal. One of her seamen fell from albft to the deck, and broke his back. He aied two days before arrival at Townsville. A Charters Towers telegram states that a man named George Ross shot a woman named Annie Court dead. He has confessed to the deed, stating that he married the girl, and that she turned out badly, and ran away with another nan. — Post.
