The Wellington Land Board meets on Thursday, Januarj' 31st. Captain Edwin wired at 12.40 p.m. today : - Indications for glass falling and i for strong northerly -winds. A notice from the Commissioner of Taxes appears today intimating that Income Tax should be paid in one sum on the 31st instant. There was a large attendance of Masons at Marton last evening, when Bro. J. J. Macdonald was installed as W M. of the Ruapehu Lodge, No. 2137, E.C. A novelty in England is the bamboo bicycle. The bamboo machines are very light and attractive in appearance. The lease of a first class farm near Birmingham is advertised by Mr T. Wateon, commission agent. A meeting of the Feilding Sports committee will be held at the office of Mr Sherwill on Wednesday the 19th inst., to receive Balance sheet etc. Members of the Feilding Firo Brigade are reminded of the meeting at seven o'clock this evening, in the Foresters' Hail, At Waverley, a young man named Frew was kicked on the head by an entire horse and sustained concussion of the braiu. He is in a critical condition. MrH.S. Fish, ex M.H.R., Mayor of Dunedin, was received as a Good Templar on Tuesday night. Such, at east, is the statement made in a Press Associa> tion message just to band The twelfth annual stock-taking sale of Messrs Warnock and Adkm's drapery es tablishnent commences to-morrow. The Feilding branch is offering special value in all lines. Mr John Cobbe's annual stock-taking sale, which is always a success, will commence to morrow, when, as will be found on referring to his new advertisement appearing to-day, every line has been gn-atly reduced. Messrs Napier, Bell, and Hales, engineer inspectors appointed by the Government to inspect the railways of the colony, were in Feilding last night on an official visit. They were accompanied by Messrs Beattie and Lawson, and went north by special train this morning. We are advised that the Norman and Berkely Dramatic Company, now playing in Newcastle, will visit this colony at an early date, and will play either one or two nights in Feilding. The Company is au exceedingly powerful one, and composed of really clever artists. A shocking accident happened at Kawhaka, near Kuinaru, on January 2nd, a boy named John Newton, eleven years of age, falling out of a trap and having his neck broken under the wheel. Tho boy smother is said to have witnessed the accident. At the Wellington Police Court on Wednesday, John Idle was charged with stealing a kit of carpenter's tools, the property of some person unknown. When the tools were produced, one of the presiding justices, Mr Lockie, discovered that they belonged to him. Idle went up for three months. Messrs Barraud and Abraham, seed, grain, and general merchants, of Palmerston and Feilding, announce fresh arrivals of grass and clover seeds for Autumn sewing, binder twines of various manufactures, cornsaeks, &c. They invite farmers to apply for samples and quotations. A solicitor sent to Truth the following curiosity. It is an item from a bill charged by one professional man against another : — " Called on you, but you were engaged. "We called again later in the day, but you were out. On the following day you sent to us, calling later we were unable to see you. . . .£3 3s. News has reached the Mines Department by the last English mail of a judicial decision at Home, which will have a powerful influence upon the mining industry. Its practical effect is to set aside the patent rights under which a royalty is charged for the application of cyanide of potassium to the treatment of gold and silver ore. The election of directors of the Wei lingion Woollen Factory, held last Wednesday, resulted as follows : — Elected : Mr W. A Fitzherbert, 1447 votes ; Hon. O. F. Johnston' 1406 ; Messrs W. H. P. Barber, 1221 ; A. E. Exley, 1066 ;A. E. Gibbes, 1058 ; A. Warburton, 870 ; C. E. Zohrab, 859 Not elected : Messrs G. M Kebbell, 809 ; T. Mason, 636; W. Clark, 605; R Gardner, 513; C. Edmonds, 466; J. Hutchen, 454; T. K. Macdonald, 415. It is the " correct thing " now in certain portions of the Government Buildings, Wellington, for the emplojes to betray a tolerably accurate knowledge of the Gaelic language It is also alleged that the " official " consumption of ' pure Scotch " whiskey is on the increase in the Empire Oity. These are, doubtless, delicate compliments to the Minister of Lands, who hails — or shouts, rather — from the " Land o' tho Leal." A resident of Masterton, says the Wairarapa Star, tendered one of the new postal notes to a well-known publican in payment for drinks. The publican thought it was a joke, and with the remark - " All right, my friend, there'll be no more jokes with this one, I assure you," he took the note and burned it in the kitchen fire. He has since had to find the difference between the price of the drinks and the value of the note in hard cash, and he does not think the joke at all a merry one. The anniversary services of the Birmingham Weslevan Sunday School will be held on Sunday, January 13th, morning, afternoon, and evening. The child ren have been trained to sing special hymns and solos, and the Rev W. Keall, px-President of the Conference, will be the preacher for the day. The annual picnic to be held in Mr Palmer's paddock on the following day promises to be a success. Luncheon and tea will be provided. In the evening a concert will be held in the church, when the prizes will be distributed.
