Lighting Towns by Electricity.
The Hawera Borough Council have adopted a report in favor of lighting the town by electricity. The following are some of the reasons which enabled the Council to arrive at a decision : — 1. That electricity is a better and a much safer light than any other. 2. That the cost of installation (should the Council decide to take same over at any time) is much less, being quite half the cost of the erection of gas works. 3. That the cost to the consumer of light is ranch less, being somewhat as follows : — Gas, at 16s per 1000, cost £2 12s 6a per annum per 12 candle power burner. Electricity— 2os per annum for each lamp of 8 c.p., or 35s for 16 c.p. Kerosene, at 13s per case, costs 4-3 16s per annum for each 80 c.p. (reputed) lamp, actually about 40 c.p. There are many minor factors in favor of electricity as against gas, among which may be mentioned the following :— The cost of power for engines WQuldbe less than for gas engines. The streets and footpaths would not be disturbed and cut up to lay mains and branch pipes; the cost of lamp posts (about £1 each) would be saved through using post carrying mains being used, for which, special arrangements would be made. Electricity is also, much cleaner and healthier than gas, by reason of its not generating carbonic acid gas, or exhausting the oxygen where used. The source of power would be obtained from tho Tawhiti stream.— Hawera Star. ' * LWbat^s good for Hawera shoofckbe good for Feilding/j - *- ,: .^ r - w< Xpclwer, of Jgwjtea,; gdror. ■ ■ ■ .*-,■■ ■■•
