Tbe fact of the Goveruiuent having declared their intention to take over the Welliagton-Manawatu railway, is a subject for congratulation to everyone resident on this coast, if not in the whole North Island. It will be an enormous saving to consumers who have hitherto had to pay double terminal charges on freights, which in tbe course of each year must have amounted to many thousasds of pounds. When the transfer is accomplished which will be in less than a year, then the whole system of the railways of the colony will be under one control and managed under one system. Still, tbe colony must- acknowledge her indebtedness to the enterprise of the Wellington Manawatu JRailway Company, for without them the present mode of cumniunication between this part of the colony and Wellington, would not have been created for many years to come. Much of the progress and prosperity of the new settlements which bave sprung up along the railway line from Wellington towards New Plymouth are due to this, and we trust the fact will not be forgotton by those who have benefited either directly or indirectly. The Government have acted wisely, but whether they will win the approval of tbe South Island mem bers remains to be seen.
