The efficacy of the rabbit-proof fencing aloug the Queensland bordor in demonstnited by the fact that the country on the New South Wales side of the fence | is in a deplorable condition, rabbits eating every vestige of the grass and i dyingjin hundreds and thousands against I the fence, while on the Queensland side J the grass is in a flourishing condition, ■ and scarcely a rabbit is to be seen. { The barque Drutncraig arrived off Newcastle to-day. She reported that one death had occurred from small-pox during the voyage, and that another case was convalescent. The vessel was ordered on to Sydney, where she will be placed in quarantine. This Day. The annual report of the Labor Bureau deplores the gloomy outlook. Fully two thousand men are out of work at Newcastle, with the prospect of a general strike looming in the distance. The report urges the Government to proceed without delay in the construction of public works. A local firm has received an order for a quan ity of New South Wales ornamental haid wood timber. The order is a result of the samples forwarded to Capetown by the Government. o BLBi'DBNB, i bid Day Parliament has resumed. The Council has received a large number of petitions requesting it to reject the Land Tax Bill. The petitioners include Land, Banks, Building Societies, and Municipalities. By a fire in the furniture factory of Messrs Falshaw Bros. North Melbourne, damage to the amount of t'sooo was done. The insurances amount to £36,0u0. Adelaide, This Day. Admiral Bridge, the new naval commander, has arrived.
