IPKB PBEBS ASSOCIATION). London, December 31. Mr McKerrow proposes to form a company with a capital of £'300,000, to establish a direct steam service between Manchester and Australinn ports. At a meeting of the British Broken Hiil Company it was resolved to reduce the capital to £264,000 by cancelling £4 on £5 shares, and 32s on £2 shares. There is good demand for the Tasrnanian loan, which is now quoted at about 2£ per cent premium. Lord Randolph Churchill is slightly better, and hopes are entertained of his recovery. Ottawa, January 2. The remains of the late Sir J. S. D. Thompson, Premier of Canada, brought from England on board the H.M.S Blenheim, were buried yesterday at Halifax, the obsequies being the occasion of a most impressive scene. Rome, January 2. The Pope has appoinfcdd Bishop John O'Reilly, of Port Augusta, to succeed the late Dr Reynolds as Archbishop of Adelaide. Paris, January 2. It is reported here that the natives attacked the M. Mateil Congo expedition, killing many, including 20 whites. 8t Pktersburg, January 2. Russia has assigned to Great Britain, General Yauoff's road, which is the only practicable route in Pamirs. Krivassin, Minister for Railways, has been dismissed on the grounds of corruption in connection with contracts. jNew York, January 2. Giving evidence before the committee appointed to enquire into the condition of the New York police force, Superintendent Byrne, the chief of the force, declared that lie was unable to prevent blackmail being levied on criminals, and that the continued conflict among the Commissioners frustrated his efforts to prevent it. Almost the entire force, he believed, was buying promotion, and he offered personally to resign and give all the assistance in his power to reorganise the force. Superinteudaut Byrne lias since resigned. Beblin. January 2. The Kaiser has approved plans for the more efficient testing of the readiness of the troops on the French frontier. It is also intended to place a portion of them on a permanent war footing. The Wochenblatt, the Berlin organ of the German War Office urges army leaders to increase and encourage the fighting spirit of the rank and file, in order to be ready for an emergency.
