Terrible Fatal Accident.
A TRACTION ENGINE BOLTS. (Per Press Association) Christchurch, December 18. News has-been received of a fatal accident in the Weka Pass. Full particulars are not to hand, but from what can be gathered three men on a traction engine were proceeding down a hill when the brake chain broke and the men lost control. In jumping off one man was run over and killed outright, a second is not expected to live, and the third is being brought to the hospital. Later.. In the fatal accident which occurred in Weka Pass this morning, J. Brown was taking a traction engine down a long incline when the brake gave way and the engine rushed to tlie bottom of the incline, ran up the bank and turned completely over. Brown and Steersman escaped with cuts and bruises, but of tbe three men in the trucks drawn by the engine one named Daniel Murphy was terribly injured about the head and died a short time afterwards. Another named Joseph Burbery was seriously injured and was brought down to the Christchurch hospital. Murphy was a single man, belonging to Melbourne.
