The Feilding Star. Oroua & Kiwitea Cunties Gazette. Published. Daily. THURSDAY, DEC. 20, 1894. BETTER TIMES.

Although owing to the depression in the wool market thoro is an ominous dullnesH in trade, yet we have some hope that as the money soon to be liberated by the Government Advances to Settlers Act gets into circulation there will be a marked change for the better. Applications up to the full amount allotted by Parliament for the first year's operations, viz, £1,500,000, are said to have been received by the Public Trustee, who will distribute it according to regulation, ao that the applicants for the minimum will be dealt with on exactly the same lines as those who desire to obtain the maximum of £2500. As this large sum of money will for the most part bo expended in labor and improvements on the land occupied by Bmall farmers, the whole commnmty must benefit thereby. The natural outcome of helping the settlers will be that more land will be cleared and brought into cultivation, and the dairy industry, which is at present the mainstay of the farmers, still further developed. In fact the productive resources of the colony, especially iv this part of it, will be increased to an extent which will compare favorably with any of the work done during the past five yoars. It is difficult to persuade peoplo when they are depressed by present worries and troubles to take a cheerful view of the future, or to have confidence in themselves or their neighbours to do better, but willi '• the turn iv the tide of fortune " which must be near at hand, a more courageous spirit will manifest itself and cause even the most despondent to " buckle to " with fresh energy and new hope. What is wanted mostly to effoct this is " a little ready money," and that need is about to bo supplied at a time when it will do most good.
