Previous to vaoating the chair, the retiring Mayor, Mr W. Carthew, tendered his thanks to the Councillors for the support he had received from them during his term of office. The year bad not been successful in one way owing to the flood, which had already cost £800 for repairing damages. The estimates had exceeded previous years, and the future of the Borough was hopeful. He trusted the Council would not cease to push on the municipal buildings and water works. He would be happy to assist the Borough in the future as in the past, He then vocated the Mayoral chair. Cr. Sandilands, Mayor-elect, having made the ÜBual declaration took hii seat as Mayor, and in doing so thanked the ratepayers for his election to the honorable position of Mayor. He had served five years at the Counoil table and would work in the interests of the Boroagh, He had plans for various matters and would lay them before the Council when they bad matured. He was of opinion that before a ratepayer aspired to the honor of Mayor, he should first serve a term as Councillor. Cr Goodbehere congratulated the Mayor on his election to the position and felt sura he would carry out his duties in a manner equal to any of his predecessors. He was confident the affairs of the Council would be carried on as harmoniously as in the past. Cr Bailey also congratulated the Mayor. Ho hoped that by this time next year the Council would occupy its own office, and that the water vrorki would bo pushed on. Cr Worsfold, in congratulating the Mayor, felt sure that they would be treated by His Worship in the same courteous manner as the late Mayor had treated them. Cr Fowles said ho had seconded tbo resolution at last meeting without con* sidering tho matter. Cr Goodbehere thought the whole matter should bo gone into again. The bridge should bo temporarily opened at once at as little expense as possible. He would like to see a good bridge there, but sufficient waterway should bo given. If the proposed works were gone on with, he was of opinion they would not last. He did not favor the present scheme. They could not afford to throw away .£l5O. Cr Fowles supported Cr Goodbehere's views. Cr Saywell contended they must protect at once the Queen street side of the bridge. Cr Bailey favored temporary repairs to the bridge. I Cr Allan said it was only a small job and did not believe in patching. He would like to see fresh planß prepared. The motion was carried.
