(PtsK FRKife ASSOCIATION. I Auckland, December 18 Mr J. C. Hunnn, manager of the Bank of New Zealand Estates Co., and staff numbering ten, left for Wellington McLean Black, said to be an ex com mercial traveller, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment with hard labour for larceny of a book from the Free Pub lie Library. Three respectably dressed young men named William Uutchinson, Henry Wil oiot, and Henry Wilson were committed for trial on a charge of larceny on the s.s. Tasmania. As the s.s Te Aniiu reached Queen street wharf a saloon passenger Walter Smith, died in the social hall. He came on board in bud health and was a passen ger by the Kaikoura from London. He was a grocer in Wakefieid, England. Wellington, December 18 The first sod of the drainage tunnel through the hill*, to Lvell'a Bay was turned by the Mayor to-day. Curistcuurch, December 18. Mr P Butler, the well-known racing man was admitted to the hospital at an early hour this morning suffering from a wound in the throat, supposed to be self iuflicted. Dunedin, December 18 At the inqueßt on A V. Brown, the clerk who shot himself, the evidence showed that deceased had been despondent boing troubled a good deal with hi* head. The jury returned a verdict of "suicide while temporarily insane."
