The Campbelltown school children will give a concert on Wednesday evening. The Railway Commissioners have issued a new scale of rates, fares, and charges to come into force on the 24th instant. A man named Brookes got seven day's imprisonment at Palmcrstou for stealing a piece of timber valued at 6d. Tho Palmerston Polo Club defeated two teams from the Warreugate Club on Saturday. The scores were - 3-2 and 61. It is stated by the Wairarapa Daily Times, that the Government contemplates (several very large purchases of native lauds.
A bright yellow sky at sunset presages vind ; a pale yellow, wet ; orange or sopper colored, wind and rain. A public reading room is to be opened n Halcombe this evening. The iustitu;ion will no doubt be thoroughly appreJiated by the residents of that town. A party of eight Feilding cyclists went through the Manawatu Gorge to Woodville yesterday, returning in the even ing. The Primitive Methodist choir, assisted by some of the best local talent, are practising assiduously for the Jubilee concert to be given on Christmas night. The annual picnic and presentation of prizes in connection with the Campbell - town school will take place on Friday nest. Frizes to the value of £18 18s will be given away. Mr James "Wallace, recently manager of the Wellington- Manawatu Railway, intends to settle on his property at Shannon, and a large residence has just been completed for him. We have pleasure in placing on record the fact that Edward, the eldest son of Mr L. E. Reade, solicitor, Feilding, won the third Turnbull scholarship, value five pounds, at the Wellington College. An adjourned meeting of the shareholders of the Longburn Freezing Company will bo held in the Theatre Royal, Palmerston North, on Saturday next to elect a director. On Thursday last Mrs Domin, of Halcombe, met with rather a serious accident. She was getting out of Mr 11. Linton's buggy, opposite her house, when her foot slipped off the step, and she fell and sustained injury to her spine. A number of Palmerston cyclists who intend competing in the bicycle events at the Feilding Sports on Boxing Day had a run over the track on the Oval yesterday, and expressed themselves very well satisfied with it. There was a good muster at the local tennis court on Saturday afternoon, when the usual practice games were indulged in. The entries for the handicap tournaments, j which closed on Saturday, are very good. The handicaps will be published at the end of the present week. At tho Otahuhu (Auckland) Trotting Meeting on Saturday thero were several accidents. In tho Hurdle Raco two horses fell and one of riders received a good shaking. In the Harness Trot a I bolt ensued, and live sulkies were smashed. Mr F. Hedges, for whom Messrs Bosher Bros., the well known sawmillera of Makino, had just completed an extensive order for timber, was so well pleasod with the expedition shown and the excellence of the wood, that ho sent up a case of champagne on Saturday morning as a slight token of his gratitude. Tho following tenders were received by tho Kiwitea County Council on Saturday last for bridle track on the Mangipipi road:— Madden and Co, 73 chains £69 14s 6d (accepted) ; J. Garland and Palmer, 73 chains, £78 ; M. Doherty, £1 2s 6d per chain ; Behrent and Strawbridge, 53£ chains, £75 ; B. Poole, £1 3s 6d per chain ; J. Macintosh, L 73 10s for 73 chains. The following rates wore reported as outstanding in the respective ridings of the Kiwitea County at the Council's meeting on Saturday last :— Waituna riding, £28 5s 2d ; Makino, £35 18s 6d ; Oroua, £24 0s 9d: Hautapu, £18 Is; Ongo, £38 Is 9d ; Apiti. L 65 17s 8d ; Kimboltoa, L 8 13s 6d ; total, L 243 18s 4d. Another batch of defaulters were drawn and summonses will bo issued to be heard at the next sitting of tho Feilding S.M. Court. We have to acknowledge receipt of the Railway Time-Tablo from Bth inst. The principal alterations siuco tho November guide was issued are : — Auckland section, main service between Auckland and Rotor ua inserted. NapierTaranaki section, times of trains slightly altered. Our contemporary, the Oamaru Mail, says : Rumor has it that negotiations for amalgamation are still quietly proceeeing between the Bank of New Zealand and the Colonial Bank, and that important developments may be anticipated about February next. The Birmingham School Committee met on Thursday last. Present - Messrs Morton (chairman), Bainbridgo, Anyon, Harris, R. Burne. It was decided to spend L 7 in prizes for the ohildren, the prizes to bo given away next Friday, when the annual picnic will be held. Tho additions, which will make the school more than double its presont size, will bo completed before it is reopened after tho New Zear. It was also decided to enforce tho Compulsory Clauses of the Education Act when the school is re-opeued after the Christmas holidays. There was a large muster of polo players on Saturday afternoon, when several games were played. The principal interest was centred in the game between a team pioked by Mr N. Gorton and four others Mr Gorton's team was : Gorton, Cooper, Giesen and Strachan ; the other team consisted of Messrs Matheson, Lewis, Lance and Pickering. After a fast game the former team won by several goals. A match will be played at Feildinp, against a team from the Rancitikei Club, on Wednesday or Saturday next. The Misses Lewis provided afternoon tea for the players on Saturday afternoon, which was much appreciated. The Feilding Club has applied for affiliation to the Christchurch Association, A lad named Henry Green, son of Mr 0. Green, of Queen street, accidentally shot himself in the right thigh about three inches above the knee at about noon »estorday, with a toy pistol. It appears Green, who is about sixteen rears of age, with another boy named Brennan, were practising with the pistol, shooting at a turnip as a mark. Green had the pistol in his hand and was going to have a shot, when his attention was attracted to somebody passing on the road and tho pistol went off, the bullet entering his thigh. The lud was at once taken to Dr Charlton, who endeavoured to exttact the bullet, which had taken a course towards the knee, but without success, tho projectile bein«? very small. Dr Charlton consequently- ordered the removal of the lad to the Palmerston North Hospital. Providing the bullet does not work in to the knea joint there will be no danger of any serious injury resulting. We would draw the attention of our readers to an advertisement appearing in to-day's issue, of the Wakamarina Golden Bar Gold Mining Company placing 10,000 shares in the market. We havo perused the prospectus (copios of which may be obtained from the local agent, Mr Watson), which gives a fair description of the mine and its prospects. The names of Messrs H. A. Gordon, Leslie McArthur, and E. H. Beere should be a sufficient guarantee. There is a full description by Mr B. Wolff, an experienced mine manager from the Thames, who has personally inspected the mine and gives a detailed report thereon. The mine is well opened up, and as the issue of the 10,000 shares will be devoted to tho erection of machinery, crushing operations can be started within two months. There are 500 tons of quartz ready, broken from the different levels, and from battery tests mado at tho School of Mines, Thames, have given highly payable results. The proceeds of these 500 tons will pay all incidental expenses for machinery, etc., and dividends may confidently be expected after preliminaries .have been defrayed,
