Oroua River Protection Works.
A meeting of those interested in protecting the banks of the Oroua river where it is encroaching on tho properties of Messrs C. Bull aud R. H. Whisker, and for which purpose a loan is being raised, was held at Mr C. Bray's office, Manchester street, on Saturday evening. Present — Messrs C. Bull, E. Jennins, A. Dernier, Bonness, R. H. Whisker. Mr C. Bray, senr., was also present and explained the plan he had prepared for diverting the water into a straighter channel and protecting tho banks of tho river from further encroachment. Ho recommended putting in a strong pier of wooden piles across the stream to divert it, and wood and iron piles for protection lower down tho stream, a strong stop bank, 4ft 6in high, Bft wide on the top 26ft at the base aud 36 chains long to bo constructed, starting in Mr Bull's property and ending iv Mr Whisker's to provent an overflow. The estimated cost of tho whole work being £321. It was decided to alter tho plans and specifications (to reduce the cost) as follows : — Twenty wooden piles to bo of white pine, nmu or matai (in place of 41 tqtara piles) 18 feet long, round, 16 inches in diameter at the thickest and 10 inches at the thiuest end ; the remainder of tho piles to be 18 feet iron rails ; the stopbank to bo 6 feet wide at the top with a slope of 3ft to one as suggested (if the tenders are not too high tho bank may be constructed according to the original specifications) ; the channel for tho diversion to be 20 feet wide in place qf 40 ; contract to bo let in two parts, separato tenders to bo called for the stophank and cutting, aud pile driving and wire ; tenders to close at Sandou on Friday, January 4th, 1695.
