Apiti Notes.
Shearing operations have lately occupied much of our industrious settlers' time, the clip, I am pleased to say, being in most cases well up to the average. Messrs Lowes and Jarvis are having a sawmill erected on the Apiti side of tbe Oroua river. These gentlemen are to bo congratulated in having secured some excelleut totara timber forest, the site being iv every way a suitable and valuable one for tho purpose for which it is required. Tho contract for the formation and metalling of fifty one chains of that portion of the road beyond tbe hotel having been secured by Mr Ben Poole, that eutorprisiug contractor inteuds commencing operations at once. The carrying out of this work was much needed, tho state of the road during the winter mouths being auj'thiug but favorable to rapid travelling on horseback. The annual entertainment, in aid of the school prize fund, takes place in Guy's Hall on the 21st of this month. Miss Prendergast, our able and painstaking teacher, who is extremely popular with all classes of the community, has had the children for some time under her careful training. Therefore, parents and others who extend their patronage on this occasion will be amply rewarded by an enjoyable performance, while at tho same time they will be assisting tho cause of education. It is earnestly to be hoped that there will be a large attendance at this concert. We have been favored with a fair share of tine weather lately, the roads in consequence being vow in lino condition. Feed is plentiful everywhere, and .stock is looking well. Tbe surrounding country is now looking its best, and the casual visitor who comes this way cannot but note with pleasure the various improvements going on in our progressive district. Considerable interest is being manifested in the district relative to the creamery which is to be shortly established. The visit of Mr Sawers is anxiously looked forward to by all who have the progressive interests of the place at heart. Wo are not a grumbling community, but we canuot resist an occasional growl when the river is up and v There aint no bridge to cross." Thanks to tbe persistent and able advocacy of tbe Feilding Star, that urgently needed bridgo will soon be an accomplished fact.
