(FEB PRESS ASSOCIATION) Invercargill, December 11. The Southland Metropolitan Agricultural and Pastoral show opened to-day, with excellent weather. The principle prize-takers were : — Shorthorns, champion bull, J. Mclntyre ; cow, H. Carswell ; Ayrshires, champion bull, D. McCallum ; cow, W. Rankin ; Hereford, R. Cleve ; polled Angus, champion bull and cow, Hon. M. Holmes. Sheep— Lincoln champion ram, F. Sutton ; ewe, Morris and Sutton ; Border Leicester, champion ram, McKercbar Bros. ; ewe, Robert Grieve ; Romney, champion ram, Hon. J. Fulton's Trustees ; ewe, Hon. M. Holmes ; Southdown, champion ram, D. Murray ; Shropshire Downs, champion ram and ewe, J. Reid and Sons ; Cheviots, champion ram aud ewe, Hon. M. Holmes. At tbe luncheon, the Hon. J. McKenzie spoke hopefully of the prospects of tho districts and of the colony, urging that perseverance was all that was re* quired to stem the depression caused by low prices. Old settlers, he said, had seen far worse times than the present. There had been a time when two lambs sold for Bs, and that point had not been reached yet, and would not.
