The Feilding Sports.
» The Feilding Sports Committee will meet this evening at 8 o'clock. Nominations for all events at the forthcoming sports must be in the hands of the Secretary not later than 8.30. The Oval presents a very gay appearance of an evening. Besides a number of runners, there are several bicyclists in training, and some of the riders are showing very good form. " Victor, " in the Wanganui Herald writes : — It is scarcely necessary to remind intending competitors that Tuesday the 11th inst. is the date of closing of nominations for the Feilding Sports, for the thoughts uppermost in the minds of the majority of our professional athletes are those which bear on this popular and well-conducted gathering. The racecourse presents a very animated appearance every evening, and it is certain that Wan ganui will send strong contingents both to Patea and Feilding. The latter meeting stands much in the same light to athletes in this Island as does the Melbourne Cup meeting to racegoers in Australia, and there is no neea to wonder at this, for not only are the prizes most valuable but the pick of the runners on the Island generally congregate at Feilding on Boxing Day. The sport-loving public on the coast always look forward to making their annual trip to Feilding, there to witness one of tbe best gatherings of its kind in the colony, and enjoy one of the most pleasurable day's holiday imaginable To those who have not yet taken the opportu nity of participating" in this favourite outing, I would say make the trip this year, and you will not regret doing so. A cheap ride by train, a delightfully situated course with a pretty lawn and a band discoursing sweet music thereon, and the sports carried out with the utmost smoothness, combine to make up a really pleasant day'B holiday. That tbe greater part of the success and popularity attending this fixture is due to the courteous and most able hon secretary— Mr H. L. Sherwill, who has filled that position for nearly twenty years— is bejond question, and it is to be hoped that this year's result will be gratifying to him and hia able fellow oflicialß.— l think it would bean improvement were the heats for the Sheffield Handicap drawn up the previous night, or at all events before the men go out to complete. This would be better for the scratch men as at present it may happen that they would all be drawn in one heat, and as a rule they do not care for that.
