The reports attached are three viz: (1) on the various woods required for carriage building ; (2) applicable for street paving and cabinet making, and (3) on the size the timber should be cut, aud accuracy in cutting. Slips are also enclosed containing extracts from a letter of the Agent-General, relative to the state of the timber market in England and in various parts of ihe Continent and the opportunity now afforded for our New Zealand timbers to be placed on the Home markets The necessity for immediate action being taken is urged, and the woods specially recommended aro rimu, red* birch, matai, kauri, and silver pine. The timber must be of tbe best quality, _ouud, straight grained, sawn true, and free from knots, shakes, sapwood, or other defects. The Government are prepared to take direct from the sawmillers and make arrangement for the shipment of one hundred thousand feet from each provincial district where lawmills exist, and oxpress a hope that the sawmillers will cooperate with them in their efforts to make this trial shipment a reliable guide as to what it is possible to do with our timber. The Government expert, Mr Freyberg, will take charge of the shipment and couduct the sales in England, and on the result of tbe sales coming to hand, due publicity will be given tbeni in the interests of the sawmillers.
