Local and General News. " A Tramp, Esq.," was iv Feildiug today. The Feildiug School Committee will meet this evuning at the usual hour. Several Feilding gentlemen have gone over to the Wairarapa to enjoy a few days' fishiug. 11 Very hot this morning, Bill " said a prominent settler. " Yes," replied Bill, " a regular lemonade and beer sort of a day." Expressive, anyway. There was very little tennis practice on Saturday last owing to the wet weather. Players are reminded that entries for the tournaments close on the fifteenth instant. Mr Watt, a commercial traveller, representing the Christchurch Meat Company, died suddenly in Nelson on Tuesday, the cause being an affection of the heart. Mr Thomas Gilbert, a Nelson resident of forty-three years' standing, died last week at the good old age of oightyfive. He was at one timo librarian of the Nelson Institute. The members of the Pcmberton Wosleyau Church have collected £80 towards the cost of a place of worship, and Mr Martin has given a site for the building. It is proposed to orect a church at a cost of about .£IOO. It is satisfactory to learn that tho United Farmers' Allianco have received advice by cable from their London agents that the wool market is stronger, with upward tendency and a better demand. A correspondent writes to the Wanganui Chronicle, pointing out what he considers to be an infallible remedy for asthma. This is merely tea made from the flower of the gorse, which he says has to be taken at such intervals as the particular case may require. Samples of wool grown at the Sand wich Islands have been on show at Messrs F. R Jackson and Co.'s stile rooms at Wanganui The wool only fetched l£d to 2£d per )b in London, so that New Zealand need not worry themselves over any prospective Sandwich Island comceti tion. Tho Tuapeka Times states that a lay preacher at Ratauui has been denouncing some members of the church thero for taking milk to tho local dairy factory on a Sunday. The school committee has warned the preacher that if he does not desist he will not in future bo allowed the use of the schoolroom. The elderly man John Moore, who was knocked off tho railway lino near Oroua Bridge by tho Foxton train while endeavoring to rescue his dog from danger in the early part of last week, succumbed to his injuries at the Palmerston Hospital on Saturday night without regaining consciousness. It is always pleasant to know what they think about us at Home— no matter how idiotic the thought may be. An English paper says : "In temperature New Zealand resembles Franco and North Italy, but the humidity is considerably greater. Rapid changes are a notable feature of the weather." The concert in aid of tho Birmingham Junior Cricket Club funds will be held in tho Town Hall thore on Thursday next. A good programmo has been drawn up, which is expected to attract a good house. The comic element will bo well sustained by Messrs Lawrence and Webb, who have promised to contribute. A gentleman a short time ago foil in love with a photograph which ho saw in a shop at Bristol. The photographer could not tell him the name of the lady whose portrait ho had taken, but the gentleman, who has eiuco died, left i'4ooo for the nameless lady should she be discovered within a given period. The shipment of dairy produce by the Buahine for London from Wellington on Thursday was the largest sent away in the present season. The amount taken from the chief ports is as follows :—Lyttelton, 14 tons butter : Wellington 252 tons butter and 47 tori 6 cheese ; Auckland 175 tons cheese ; total. 319 tons butter and 222 tons cheese. Mr D. Strachan informs the Chronicle that daring last week ho caught a nurn ber of large eels in the creek running through his property at Okoia. On opening the largest of the eels, he found four ducklings which had been missed during the day. It suggests that rats, cats, and hawks are often blamed lor the wrong doing of the eels. No doubt many of the young of both wild and tame ducks are taken in this way. The following tenders were received by the Manchester Road Board on Saturday last : — Penelope road formation, 60 chains— Uyan and Dowden, £'66 (accepted) ; Speed and Co., .£1 13s a chain ; W. Remnant, £1 7s 6d a chain ; B. Poole, £123 10s ; Behrent and Strawbridge, £103. Bridgo over Makino on Forloug's road -Two temlcrs were re? ceived, but neither were accepted, being considered too high. They were : R. Lyon and Son, £84 6s ; B. Poole, £118 10s. A good deal of fun is made at tho expense of the "comp." and the reporter, but if these two classes of much rnaligued individuals were to commence a war of reprisals, tho speakers, who are the real offenders, would bo the sufferers in tho end. It is well knowu, especially among reporters, that thoso who enunciate their words clearly and distinctly, without running ono in to tho other, dropping or affixing tho aspirate, or being guilty of solecisms of olio kind or another, are tho exceptions—excoptions which are truly delightful to experience. There was a large number of playerH at the polo practice on Saturday afternoon. Several gamos were played, but the principal interest wan ecu trod in a match between teams from ilalcouibn and Feilding. Three spells were played in the match, Ilalcoinbe scoring a goal in the first spell, and Feilding Hcoring a goal in the second. In the third hjjoll Feilding succeeded in HfiOtnw two f£tHil» and thus won the match. The viuuor* were represented by MathoHOU, Cooper, Saxon and Giosen, aud the loKurH by Lane, Strachan, Lance and Frouch ; Elkington played one gamo StrochuM dropping out.

There was a largo attendance of mourners at the funeral of tho late Mrs Gordon Forlong, which took place yesterday afternoon. The service at the grave was conducted by the bereaved husband, who, despite the severe stroke which has fallen upon him, felt impelled to improve the occasion by addressing a few solemn words to those who surrounded the grave. The members of the Salvation Army, by whom the deceased lady was held in profound respect and esteem, Merc present in considerable numbers, and assisted in tho hymns that were sung. A number of very choice wreaths wero forwarded by friends of the family.— Chronicle.
