At a crowded public meeting, the Mayor presiding, under the auspices of the Early Closing Association, in view of the approaching meeting of delegates, to fix the day for the half- holiday, resolutions were carried unanimously favour of Saturday and the Government will be urged to bring in an amended Bill to strike out the exemp tions. and make the Saturday half holiday permanent and universal throughout the Colony Burke, a gumdigger was found dead in a whare near Tnkapuna A married man, name unknown wjib knocked overboard from the Seabird and drowned at Coromandel. The Hospital Board passed a resolution ordering a full enquiry into the circumstances in the case of tho gtrl Chambers who was confined in a cab, and refused admission to the Hospital and taken to the Costley Home Wellington, November 28. The Criminal sessions finished to day with the trial of E. Bennett and J. Tut hill for breaking into a warehouse nnd stealing nineteen boxes of cigarettes. Tuthill was acquitted and Bennett was convicted of receiving goods knowing them to be stolen and sentenced to one year. ChßisTchurch, Nov. 28 At a meeting of the Cheviot settlers on Monday night it was resolved to petition the Governor-in-Council to bring the Counties Act in force in the Cheviot on the earliest possible date. Thames, November 28. A man named Woodward attempted suicide to-day by shooting himself. Tho shot jußt grazed his heart, and though he still lives no hopes are entertained of his recovery. He has been in failing health lately, and this proved upon his mind.
