THK TIMBER TRADE. | ' ♦ (] Better late than never. Our readers , will remember that some months ] ago the Bawmillers and others inter Gated in the timber trade, made an effort to obtain some concession from ' the Eailway Commissioners in the di rection of reducing the freight charges on white pine. Their request was curtty refused. Since then the Agentgeneral of the colony in London has been, with the assistance of Mr Freyberg, bringing the value of New Zealand woods before the English bujers with satisfactory results so far. The Government have awakened to the importance of the position, and intend to make a trial shipment of suitable timber to London, anil are prepared to afford every reasonable assistance. We aro informed hy the Now Zealand Times that " The Premier has already been in communication with the West Coast sawmiilers on the subject, and they aro willing to furnish black birch white and silver pine, totara aud rimu. In all probability, therefore, the shipment will be made through the initiative of the Department of Industries and Commerce if those directly inter ested in the timber trade will but take the matter up in an enterprising spirit." The tawinillers have never before exhibited any lack of enterprise when an opportunity was given them of capturing new markets, and therefor© we may assume they will not be backward now, but we thing it is rather late in the day for the Government to come hat in hand to those in tho tradeior help, whon the snub the latter received in the matter of the whito pine freight cLurges is }'et fresh in their minds. However, as we said before, better late than never, nud wo trust that the now impetus given this important industry will be boneficinlly felt all over the colony.
