Corporal Punishment in Schools.
— _». (Per Press Aisociation). CiiniSTCHUHcn, November 15. The North Canterbury Education Board to-day rescinded the former resolution that girls above tho age of twelve should not be subject to corporal puuishment, and an amendment that the age should be raised to thirteen was rejected. The mover read a letter from the teachers of various schools complaining that this portion of the regulations had the effect of weakening the discipline amongst the pupils, some of the elder girls finding that they could not be punished became insubordinate and led other pupils on to disobey. It was deoided that tho resolution should not come into effect till after tho next meeting of the Board, so that the following notice of motion might be considered, That a circular be sent to each school committee asking its general opinion upon the circular No. 4, of March 16th, relating to corporal punishment, and in particular as to whether girls of all ages should bo punished in public schools.
