The Feilding Star. Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. WEDNESDAY, NOV. 7, 1894. MILK TESTING.

The greatest subject for discussion just now among dairy fanners is that of milk testing, and complaints have been made that the standard in some of the local factories has been plnced too high. We cannot speak as < xperts, but we hold the opinion that the higher the standard, the hotter must ultimately be the product. A Victorian paper remarks that owing to the many things said for and against the Dabcock milk tester, it may bo in'eresting to record the results of a month's observations in connection with the Mognolemby creamery. This creamery sends cream to the Euroa Nutter Factory to bo churned, and for tho fortnight ending May 1 '2th tho amount of butter, computed from the Babcock chart ac n result of the two tests mado during the foitnight, was on 59,240! bof milk, 25371 bof butter. Whon the returns came to hand, they showed 25401 Mb. Tho following fortnight tho computation on Iho testa was for 55,4371 bof milk 21261 bof butler. The rot urns were 21321 b. On four weeks' milk, therefore, producing nearly oOUOlbs of buttor, there was a discrepancy nf 91b, a result accurate enough to satisfy any ordinary person. Theso figures go far to prove that tho milk supplier* wore paid full vnluo in return. A valued corros poudent has informed us that at CampbelHown in May the milk le ceived at the fatt-.ry llure ahowid a better quantity viz, 'J2.J- pound* of milk to ono pound of butter. Where vendors find a gi cater profit i6 to bo made by keeping herds composed of the very best milk giviug cows, more attention will ia tho future bo givon to that portion of tho l-usiness, and tho tester instead of being a source oi dread, will bo merely looked cm as a help to provo whether a farmer is breeding tho best grades or the reverse.
