Three Months' Imprisonment for Wife Desertion.
.» Mr Martin, S.M., had before him yestcmlaj' (says the N.Z. Times) a case in which William Jcflfcrics was charged with failing to provide his wife ami child with adequate means of support. Mrs Jefferies' evidence was that she was married to defendant in June, 1888, and that they lived at Blenheim for two years. They then stayed with his people at Taranaki for 18 months, at the end of which time his father gave him a week to clear out. Thereupon he scut his wife down to her sisters, at Wollington, and himself went to look" Tor work at Waverlcy. Eight mouths afterwards her baby was born, and he wrote to her telling her not to come up to him until she was strong enough to travel. However, he ceased writing altogether for three mouths, and had not sent her any money since the child was five months old. She added that she was able to support herself, but could not provide for the child. Defendant said he had nothing to say about the matter, but supposed His Worship would have to make a» order against him. His Worship informed him that he would bo sentenced to three months' hard labour for deserting his wife, and would then have to find one surety of i.lO to pay her 10s a week.
