The Polo Club.
-♦ The opening game on Saturday was certainly a success, and the promoters of the Club here have every reason to feel gratified with the results of their labours. At half-past two o,clock a number of gentlemen met together in one of Mr Turner's paddocks, kiodly lent lor the occasion by Mr Desmond. Here the first game ever held in Feilding took place, the fun being watched by a considerable number of spectators Mr Riddiford. captain of tbe Rangitikei Club, brought over four ponies and during the afternoon did what he could to initiate those taking part in the diflerent points of tbe game Altogether five games were played, sides being chosen by Messrs Riddiford and Gorton from the following: Messrs Carr, Saxon, Matheson, Giesen, Lance, Elkington, French, Cooper, Hayne, Pickering, and Neill. The play was at times fast and exciting and some excellent form shown, when it is taken into consideration that, with the exception of two, none of the players had ever had a stick in their hands before, and the ponies were mud fat. Judging from the interest taken in the game, polo is likely to become very popular in this town. It has undoubtedly " caught on." In tbe evening a largely attended meeting was held at Hastie's Hotel, Mr Carr presiding, when it was decided to form a club to be called Tbe Feilding Polo Club The following were chosen as a General Committee : Messrs Carr, Elkington, French, Giesen, Gorton, Hayne, Holden, Lethbridge, Lance, Matheson, Pickering, Strachan and Saxon. Mr Cooper was elected Secretary It was decided to leave the election of the remaining officers in tbe hands of tbe Committee. Messrs Matheson, Gorton, and Carr were appointed a Working Committee, and instructed to make arrangements re ground. The subscription was fixed at a guinea, members to be provided with one stick. On the motion of Mr Gorton it was resolved to join the Polo Association. Mr Elkington intormed the meeting that he bad in hand some seven or eight pounds, the proceeds of a conceit given by the Feilding amateurs in aid of the Hunt Club, now defunct, which he intended handing over to the Polo Club. This announcement was met with great applause, and a vote of thanks passed to Mr Elkington for the gift. Irrespective of tbe above over £10 was subscribed in the room, which argues well for the future success of the Club. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Sewel), Secretary of the Palmerston Club, for having kindly sent his private stock of sticks for tbe use of members The utmost enthusiasm prevailed at tbe meeting, and polo promises to " hum " in Feilding The next game will be held on Friday, tbe Prince of Wales Birthday.
