V.R.C. SPRING MEETING. | Per Press Association ] Melbourne, No»em> er 3 There was glorious weather for the first day of the V R.C, Spring meeting. The coarse and surroundings were in unparalleled condition There was an excellent attendance, quite equal to tbe aye rage Derby Day, whilst the Vice Regal nnd Inter-C. lonial visitors lent an additional attraction. Havoc is evidently improving every gallop, but Carnage though extremely well performed very indifferently, Paris failed lamentably in tbe Melbourne Stakes, but Loyalty is sure to see a more auspicous day ere the meeting cIo6CS. The Sailor Prince ran well, but went in the fetlock and is unlikely to start for the Cup. in which case Moore will ride Tim Swiveller. L here was never in Australia a finer field of three-year olds than faced the starter for the Derby. Ten star eJ, Charlie Groves, as anticipated, being the only absentee. The owners of Malachite and Bonnie Scotland entered a ' protect against the Derby winner on the grounds of boring. Arihi, the winner of the Maribyrnong Plate, is a massive filly, and quite as big as Challenger, who finished fourth. The following are tbe results : — Maiden Plate.— Havoc 1, The Enohan ter 2, Perturbation 3. --> Melbourne Stakes— Ruenalf 1, Patron 2, Bruin 3. The othor starters were— Port Admiral, Captain, Lord Randolph, Carnage, Loyalty, The Sailor Prince, Lady Trenton, Nightingale, Paris, Newman, Chesterman and Nobleman. Betting sto 2 against Paris, 5 to 1 Carnage, 6 to 1 Ruenalf, 10 to 1 Loyalty. The favourite showed prominently coming to the turn, but at the distance Ruenalf came out of tbe ruck and won by a length and a half, a neck separating the second and third horses : Sailor Prinoa fourth, Paris fifth, and Loyalty ninth. Time 2mins 10J sees. V.R.C. Derby.— The Harvester (Moore) 1. Malachite (Jas Gough) 2, Bonnie Scotland (Morrison) 3. The other starters were Dreamland, Forward, Question, Marut-R. Atlas, Dryden and Destiny. Betting 5 to 4 against Dreamland, 3 to 1 Bonnie Scotland, 6 to 1 The Harvester, and 7 to 1, Marusa, 12 to 8 Malachite A beautiful start was elicited. Sweeping into the straight Bonnie Sootland was iv front with two lengths lead of Dreamland, who was followed by the Harvester. When nearing home the Harvester came with a rattle and won easily by a length and a half from Malachite, who was three quarters of a length in front of the New Zealand oolt. Time 2mins, 40£secs. Maribyrnong Plate. -Arohi 1, Wallace 2, Blue Cap 3. Fourteen started. Time lmin. 2£secß.
