The Recent Gold Discovery.
The gold reef reported as having beeu discovered last week iv tho Paparoa range, on the West Coast of the South Island, by Curtis Bros., is about two miles from Bruuner, ou the north side of the Grey river, opposite Stillwator. Miners have been prospecting in tho locality for some years past, but -without result until Friday last, when Mr C. Curtis picked up a piece of quartz. Tho actual spot is new ground, and the reef is traced to within a few yards of the Julian Company boundaiy. This company took up the lease of thirty two acres from the defunct Paparoa Goldmining Company, and was originally held by about thirty shareholders with 24,000 scrip, but some have dropped out, forfeiting their shares, leaving about twenty one shareholders representing 13,750 scrip. Providing the reef runs through the Julian Company's claim Curtis Bros, and Foary, who were working it on tribute, will get a bonus of Jt'loo from that Company for the discovery. A day after the discovery was reported there were fi ty men on the ground and other claims hay« been pegged out. Whou the reef was discovered the tributers of tho Julian claim (also known an Laugdon's) were engaged takiug a tramway from tho reef leader to the water, and in doing so came across a quantity of loose quartz. The reef is about three feot wide and was only covered with moss and light scrub. There iv likely to be some trouble as to the right to work tho claim as Mr J. Beunic is said to have held the ground for three years, and ho will lodge an i objection against a lease being given to Curtis and Feary.
