LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
(Per Press Association.) Wellington, October 19. The Council met at 2.30. The afternoon was devoted to discussing the case of Major Brown, of Taranaki B 8 reported on by the Public Petitions Committee. The report which was of a favorable nature, was referred to the Government with a recommendation that it be given early effect to The Sea Fiheries Bill and Post and Telegraph Department Bill were read a ■econdtime. The Seamen's and Shipping Aot Amendment Bill was committed. In clause 7, the number of hands for coastal or intercoastial trade vessels, the Labour Bills Committee exempted steamers plying in extended river limits from the provisions of this clause. After a long discussion this amendment was agreed to by 23 to 6, and the clause as amended added to the Bill, Clause 14, providing that wages on veessls on time agreement should be paid monthly, was struck out by 18 to 10. In Clause 17, term of imprisonment for assault on officers, was raised from three months to six months.
