Bank of New Zealand.
OUTSIDE* OPINION. Commenting upon the abandonment of the proposed amalgamation of Banks in New Zealand, the Argus says :— " It would, in our opinion, have been vastly preferable if the scheme of amalgam*, tion and the counter proposals of the Government had never come to light. But the whole question of what are to be the relations of the Government of New Zealand to the Bank of New Zealand has now been opened up, and will have to be settled. The Government and Parliament have gone too far to stay their hand and whether they acted wisely or the reverse in deciding to guarantee the 4 per cent preference stock, there is only one course ultimately before them, and that is to assume the responsibility for the whple undertaking of the Bank of New Zealand. After committing them* selves tjiey cannot sit dow« to discuss the reason* for their action, and they ought not to shilly-shally or palter with the great issue that has been raised. The assets of the Estates Company have to be released, and, pending the realisation the Government should finish the work it has begun by extending its guarantee to all the commitments of the Bank."
