The Feilding Star. OROUA & KIWITEA COUNTIES GAZETT. Published Daily. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13, 1894

NO BRIDGE FOR APITI. i We have read the Public Workf i Statement, and studied the Estimate: i with care, but cannot find that on( single penny-piece has been allottee for a bridge over the Oroua river a1 the Apiti ford. We can, however, find considerable grants for Hunter \ ville and adjacent parts, with a pro fusion of gifts to the favored Palmers ton electorate. The omission is sc ' palpably intentional that no othei , feeling than that of utter disgust a1 the disingenuous conduct of the Gov eminent in so neglecting a part of the colony where the electors have done sc much at their own cost, and by theit own energy, to advance settlement, Although there was no actual — yet there was an implied — promise made by Ministers that the wants of the people in that respect would be sup plied this or early next year, and bitter disappointment will be felt by those who were weak enough to put faith in any member of the present Liberal administration. We never expected to get anything done for Feilding, though in all conscience we have tried hard enough ; but we certainly did think that a Ministry which prated so much about " helping the settlers " would have shown some consideration to those pioneers who have worked so hard to open up new country. The work required would not only benefit the people, but would help the Government by making communication with Crown Lands further inland tnucli easier. The only consolation we have is that the day of reckoning is not far oft*, and that such sins of omission bring with them their own punishment. [Just as we were going to press we received the following telegram from Mi Stevens, M.M.R :-" The Minister oi Lands says no promise was made to place a sum on the Estimates for the bridge over tbe Oroua at Apiti. The mattei will, however, be considered by the Cabinet."] _____
