Speaking recently at a cab strike demonstration in Hyde Park, Mr Burns, M.P., observed that it was a strange coincidence that there were in London fifteen thousand cabmen, fifteen thousand policeman, and fifteen thousand public-houses. He did not know what connection there was between them, but it was a singular coincidence that spoke for itself. At one time the holding of inquests in public-bouses was simply a matter of course, but in this, as in so many other respects, matters are mending. To this end the London County Council has been active, and has succeeded in so reducing the custom that out ot 8000 inquests only 700 were held amidst the undesirable surroundings ot the public-house. The A.eibodist Times recently observed that iv one of his recent speeches at Birmingham Lord Rosebery made the following solemn and memorable statement :— " I go so far as to say this, that if the State does not soon control the liquor traffic, the liquor traffic will soon control the Mate." Lord Kosehery is not tond of making strong statements, and he is weighted also with all the respon 6i bili ty of the highest servant of the Crown. Arrangements for the World's Crusade of the Woman's I hnstian 1 empcrance Union are progressing. At the Prince ot Walue's levee, recently held, Rev. Dr Lunn was presented — this being r-garded as a necessary step preparatory to his proceeding with Lady Heurj Somerset ana Miss Wiliard to the huropeitn four's with the objict of preneutiug to the respective monarchs the monster World's Petition against the drink evil. It appears that Dr Luun is the first Wesleyan minister, other than Presidents, who has been pres< nted at Court.
