CHINESE TROOPS ARMED WITH BOWS AND ARROWS. ARTFUL DODGES OF THE JAPANESE ADMIRAL. JAPANESE ADVANCE ON PEKIN. THE POWERS ABSTAIN FROM INTERFERENCE. (PBB PEBSS ASSOCIATION.! Shanghai, October 10. Reports which, however, require confirmation, have been received that the ■ Japanese troops landed at New Chang, situated at the head of the Lumting Gulf, and that they were compelled to recross the Yalu river by the Chinese outposts. t October 11. A thousaud Chinese troops, armed with bows and arrows, have gone to the front. The Emperor of China is infusing fresh energy into the defence of the Empire. The Japanese fleet is reported to have been more crippled in the late engagement off Yalu than has been admitted. It is further stated that the Japanese admiral was utilising dummy warships in order to make a sham demonstration off the coast. It is reported that the Chinese fleet has been repaired and refitted, and leaves Port Arthur to-day. The Chinese arrested four spies at Port Arthur who were caught cutting the wires connecting torpedoes with the shores. London. October 11. The Powers have agreed that no obstacle shall be placed in the way of the Japanese advancing upon Pekin.
