Sheep Disease in the North.
♦- — - — Says the Auckland Heruld:— Mr Clif ton, the chief inspector of stock for th« Auckland district, and Mr Cooke, th< northern inspector, yisited Matakanlately, investigating the cause of the greai mortality among sheep in the nortt and after visiting various flocks anc dissocting specimens concluded thai the causes are the same as elsewhere viz., worms. They could offer no bop< of a change for the better under the present syetem, and said frequent changing of pasture, turnip or gram feeding will more healthy surroundings, would be required until ihe return of drier sea>oue which, however, is against the experience of Cape Colony, where 50U.000 sheep died from worms in a season that was so dry that uo ploughing could be done, Tbe two extremes of dry and wet seasons especially favour the production of paras sitio diseases. Wet when the parasites seem to be able to live on tbe damp ground ; dry when tbe drinking sources became diminished aad stagnant, and the eggs of embryos are collected in so small a volume of liquid that the sheep drinking become more readily infected. If the parasites have come to stay and oannot be combated without treating the sheep on the lines indicated by the inspectors, then sheep-raising will no longer be profitable on the broken bush country, tbat at one time was so well adapted, and •»U,.t n l.n tn turn it tn i« A tirobleUl.
