Arrival of the 'Frisco Mail.
m (Per Press Association). Auckland, This Day. Arrived - Mariposa, from 'Frisco. Passengers : Mmses Woodcock (2), Mesdames Adams and Woodoook, and Messrs Tenlin, Simpson, Adams and Son, and McKinnon ; thirteen steerage. The Mariposa brings dates from Europe to September 19th. Mr Proctor, Consul in London for Madagascar, said in an interview! that the French blockade of the Malagassy coast would principally injure Great Britain, whose trade with Madagascar was dominant. France only wanted Madagascar for strategic purposes. According to a report received at St. Louis the Frenoh garrison at Timbuctoo (Africa), after three days' fighting with* hostile tribes, which have been infesting that city, made a sortie with tho result that tho garrison was annihilated by an immense force of natives and Arabs. A despatch from Finland tells the story of dreadful suffering experienced by the men employed in the Baltic fisheries. Eight boats foundered, and 15 fishermen were drowned. Negro lynching has reached such an extent in the southern states that apprehension is felt lest a race war between blacks and whites will result. Six alleged Negro incendiaries were lynched uear Wellington city.
