LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
(Per Press Association.) Wellington, October 8. The Council met at 2.80. Hon. Oliver, as a question of privilege, drew attention to the comments of the Wellington Press on the way he had voted on the Consols Bill. On his honor he assured the Council he had not been canvassed for bis vote, nor had he spoken to any one as to the way in which be should vote. Hon. McLean said he had been much more aspersed for the way in which he had voted on tbe Consols Bill and Cbeap Money Bill, but he oared not a iot He should still continue to vote according to his conscience. The Colonial Secretary, replying to a question, said inquiry was being made by the Inspector of Machinery as to the cause ot tbe accident on the Switchback Railway at Christchurch. The Wellington Switchback would not be opened until it had been passed by the Inspector. The Council decided to insist on its amendments in the Consols Bill. The Foreign Investment Companies Deposit Bill was committed and reported with trifling amendments. The Cheap Money Bill was committed. Clause 26 was amended, on the motion of tbe Hon. McLean, in the direction doing away with the proposed advances on Land Board fund. In clause 82, " How advances are to be made," LSOOO as the maximum amount to be advanced was struck out, but the sum to be substituted will be fixed when the Bill is next considered. Progress was reported on this clause, and the Council adjourned.
