Accuaed pleaded not guilty. There were no caps on the nipple. The threat it was alleged was only the talk of a drunken man. Mr Beetbam said the matter was a very serious one, and sentenced accused to two months' hard labour. The boating and cricket season opened yesterday with the usual ceremony. Lewis put up a 100 mile record for New Zealand, which he covered in shrs. 50mns. 45secs. Mastkbton, Ootober 6. Masterton defeated Grey town at Carterton to day by 10 points (two goals) to nil. Masterton has therefore won the banner this season. Hohitiki, October 6. An important copper disoovery has been made in the middle branch of the Kokaitahi tributary of the Hokitika River, eight feet, consisting of peacock ore and manganese. Greymouth, Oct. 6. The Eeefton gold returns for the week were : Drake, 2640z amalgam from 284 tons ; Big River, 112oz gold from 90 tons ; Cumberland Tribute, 83£oz from 87 tons.
