A Shocking Accident.

(PEE PREB> ASSOCIATION. I Christchurch, Oct. 7. A shocking accident happened on the Switchback railway last night. The railway had only been opened on Thursday, and appeared to work smoothly till the time of the accident. It appears that the automatic switch failed to act and allowed an empty car to run on the line on which a car full of people was running. Both the vehicles were smashed to atoms and four occupants so seriously injured that they had to be taken to the hospital. These are — Beatrice. Thompson, a young woman, with compound fracture of the left leg and fracture of the right leg; Morris Williams, John Pearson, and Ernest Whittington, three youths, with broken legs. Each other occupant escaped with minor injuries.
