HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
The House met at 2 30. The Speaker expressed an opinion that the Legislative Council could not alter sections 5 and 21 of the Land for Settle ments Bill as they dealt with the appro* priation of money. It was decided to disagree with these amendments. The Native Land Court Bill was in committee for the rest of the afternoon, but up to the dinner adjournment had not been materially altered. The House resumed at 7.80. In committee on the Native Land Court Bill an amendment proposed bj Mr Houston to prevent any lawyers and agents appearing before the court was negatived by 83 to 22. The various clauses of the first part of the Bill were discussed at great length, but all amendments were rejected in most instances by large majorities. Progress was then reported. The Public Works Bill (No. 2) was committed. The unopposed clauses were passed, the debateable clauses being postponed. Progress was reported. The House rose at 8 10 am.
