Library Committee,
* FA meeting of the Library Committee was held last evening. Present — Messrs J. H. Stevens (in the chair), G, W. Fowles, A. R. Allan, and J. Cobbe. Accounts amounting to Ml 15s 6d were paused for payment, leaving a balance in hand and at bank of £9 19s lOd. Mr Shearer resigned bis position on the committee, owing to inability to attend. The Librarian reported that 215 books had been issued during the month, and that there were 57 subscribers on the books at present. Mr Bryon de Winton's offer to give half the proceeds from a lecture and concert, to be given in the Assembly Rooms on Tuesday evening, to the library fund, was accepted with thanks. The Department of Justice, through Mr John Stevens, M.H.R., informed the committee they were unable to grant a portion of the section occupied by the courthouse for a library. The committee, recognising the trouble Mr Stevens had gone to in the endeavour to secure the site, passed a hearty vote of thanks to him for his efforts. In view of tho fact that the Borough Council ought to erect Council chambers and library, the committee do not consider that they are at present justified in makiug further efforts to erect a library. Mr J. H. Stevens, with a view to encouraging the young people's section of the library, notified that he would offer a prize of 5s to any subscriber in tnat section for a review of any work in that department. Also, that Mr Carter wcjuld be requested to act as judge.
