The Madagascar Consul in London states that the French are rapidly making Diego Suarez, in the north of the island, a second Malta. In the event of a blockade of the Suez Canal, he says, a few cruisers could cripple the British trade with India and Australia. Mr William Dean, formally of Melbourne, has bequeathed .£28,000 to the Church Missionary Society, the British and Foreign Bible Society, and the Church Pastoral Aid Society iv equal shares. Washington, September 19. Four robbers stopped a train at Santa Fe, in Missouri, and shot the driver. The police, however, had been fore* warned, and a party was on board the train. They exchanged shots with the bandits, two of whom were killed. Tho others escaped, but are being pursued ■with the aid of bloodhounds. Vienna, September 19. The Emperor cordially received the clerical opponents of the Hungarian Civil Marriage Bill, He said he recognised the sincerity of their motives, and assured them of his friendship. The difference of creed should be no barrier to friendliness of heart.
