LADIES TO THE FORE.

"The Nineteenth Century " for July is remarkable for containing three contributions from female writers that may be considered among the best in that number. The first, by Mrs Sidney Webb, is an able analysis of the results of the Royal Labor Commission which has just closed its labours after a sitting of three years. That fifty thousand pounds have been expended and the result unsatisfactory, from a utilitarian point of view, is a terrible fiasco ; and the twenty pages of closely written scrutiny of a hundred foolscap pages of evidence is so well and tersely expressed as to be worthy of perusal by all who take an interest in questions of labor and capital. The next, by Mrs Logan, is an interesting and amusing episode of " A Night in India," in which incidents of a native pilgrimage to the sacred river " Nerbudda" are graphically pourtrayed. The third, by Miss J. A. Taylor, is rather a grim subject, " The Art of J Dying," but it is so wittily written, so abounding with epigram and anecdote, as to accord the reader a quarter of an hour which will not be wasted. Our hearty congratulations are freely tendered to the above lady contributors.
