Alleged Attempt at Shooting.
A SERIOUS AFFAIR. At noon to-day the residents of Bowen street and those in the immediate vicinity were startled by hearing a pistol shot. On enquiry being made it transpired that a man named James Coleman had discharged a revolver at Mr Alfred Hannett, who at the time was leading the stallion Diomedes. It appears there was some difference between the men, and after they had had an altercation in the street, Coleman discharged the revolver, in the direction of Hannett, who dodged round the horse he was leading and ran up Stafford street out of further danger. Special Constable Flavall, who heard the report, on enquiry of Hannett as to the cause, followed Coleman, who went to the Empire Hotel. On the way Mr Flavall informed Constable Tuohy. They then proceeded to the hotel where they arrested Coleman, who had in his possession a six chambered revolver and a number of cartridges. The men are both married Hannett being a resident of Feilding, while Coleman's wife at present resides at Palmerston North. The cause of the affair is alleged to be jealousy. Coleman will be charged with the offence this afternoon or to-morrow before Justices.
