Football News.

On Saturday last a match was played on the Oval between a team from the Palmerston Clubs and another from the Clubs (Marten and Feilding) in the northern part of the Manawatu Rugby Union. Neither side had the team selected, the northerners having only the assistance of three Marton players (the two Shannon's and Johnston), in fact they played six substitutes, while Palmerston enme up with one man short and Aitken was played as a substitute. The northern team, after a closely contested game, defeated their opponents by 8 to 3. Palmerston kicked off and the north returned the ball to the southern twenty-fives, where they kept it for some time, until Podevin made a smart run to centre, and was mainly instrumental in changing the scene of operations to an attack on the visitors' goal line. From a pass from Hewitt, P. Giesen was enabled to score a try after a good run. Duncan failed to increase the score. The ball was taken to the Palmerston twenty-fives where W. Shannon took a pass from Robinson, and niter a clever run scored a try, but Moore failed to convert. Free kicks against the north for breaches of the rules were numerous. On changing aides play was even for a while, neither side gaining much advantage. However, as time went on the northerners put their opponents on the defensive, but they were kept well away from the coveted line. A few minutes before time was called G. Shannon mnde a clever run from midfield to the Palmerston twentyfives where some exciting play took placo, resulting in Sanson dropping over the line with the ball. Richards was entrusted with the kick and placod a goal. The northerners had slightly the best of the game, although Palmerston showed more combination and passed well. Mr A D. Thompson gave every satisfaction as referee and Messrs Matheson and Strachan acted as line umoires.
