The Clergyman and the Jockey.
■O "iIt does not often happen that a clergyman preaches a se'mon based on a jockey's life and draws a moral from tt ; but that took place at the Wesleyan Church at Renalla (Victoria), the Rev. 8. J. Hoban preached on 'The Durj of Human Life' and illustrating" his argument by reference *o the career and fate of the jockey Corregrnn. In the course of hie remarks the rev. gentleman said :— " This man's death was not only the cause of deep regret in sporting circles, but in &U sections of socie y among- rijrht- thinking people. And why ? Not "because of his skilled at.d f arJpgs horse-manship. nor his repeatedly brilliant successes on ibe turf hut. ratln-r because of his unimpeachable integrity and whole-souled dpvoti»n to the cause of right and the service of others. He was truly —to express it in a colonial way — * a white man.' And whon it was emetnbered that by the sacrifices of rinciple he had it in his power to amass an immense fortune in a comparati ely short time, such a >if'e was fairly entitled to our admiration, whether it be lived on the turf or in the church."
