THE BANK AMALGAMATION.
The amalgamation of the New Zealand and Colonial Banks may now be considered as an accomplished fact. . The agreement has been signed by the heads of the respective institutions, and is now under the consideration of the Cabinet. As the Ministry would have a certain pre-kuowledge of the conditions before they were finally decided on bj the formulators, it is safe to assume no material alterations will be made on behalf of the Government. The consent of the shareholders of the two banks to the confirmation of the agreement will be obtained on the 26th instant, on which date they are appointed to meet in Wellington and Uunedin respectively. As to the result of the debate in the House, there can be no doubt that the Act authorising the amalgamation will be • passed by an overwhelming majority. We are certain that the joining together of these two institutions will have an immense influence for good in the Colony, and be a powerful factor in restoring that commercial confidence the absence of which has been so direct a cause of the existing depression in all branches of industry.
