STOATS AND WEASELS.
If the destruction of lambs on this coast by stoats or weasels continues to increase at its present rate, wool and mutton raising will soon have to be discontinued altogether. There are no rabbits for these pests to live on therefore they have taken too kindly to the killing of an easier prey, aud, with the consequent greater ease of living are increasing and multiplying to a most alarming extent. We find on referring to the Rabbit Nuisance Act, 1882, clause 28, that the Governor in Council has power to grant licenses, or special permits, for the killing and capturing of any animal declared to be " a natural enemy of the rabbit " therefore we would suggest that that power be exercised in all parts of the colony where the rabbit nuisance is not in existence, co that here tho sheep farmers could take active measures to protect themselves without breaking the existing laws which make it an offence carrying a heavy penalty, for destroying stoats or weasels.
