The Fielding Star, Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. MONDAY, SEPT. 10, 1894. "A SOP TO OUTSIDERS. "
At tbe last meeting of the Rangitikei County Council the following singular resolution was adopted : " That tenders for tbe Vinegar Hill bridge be advertised for in tbe following papers : N.Z. Herald, N.Z. Times, Chrietchurch Frees, Otago Daily Times, Hawke's Bay Herald, and Wanganui Chronicle, and that a competent overseer for the work be advertised for in the New Zealand Times and Wanganui Chronicle " From this it may be inferred that in the opinion of the sapient members of that Council there is no man capable of contracting for tbe work of erecting a bridge in the Rangitikei, Oroua, Kiwitea, or Mana watu Counties, but he is to be found either in Canterbury, ia Otago, in Hawke's Bay, or in Wanganui. Neither is there to be found a man competent to oversee the proposed work unless he be in Wellington or Wanganui. Verily " a piophet is not without honor save in his own country and in his own house." We do not imply that the Council intended any slight on local talent, or that they thought for a moment they were about to waste the ratepayers' money 11 in distant parts." They were only stupid.
