Educational News.

(Per Press Association.) Wellington, Sep*- 7 - A deputation of member* waited on the Minister of Education thu afternoon to confer with him on certain educational questions. Mr Button, speaking lor tho deputation. said thatthej were prepared to give the Minister all the assistance in their power to enable him to carry a measure equalising the salaries of teachers throughout the Colonj and providing for the marking of monejs voted by the Rouse for salaries in such a way as to prevent them being diverted to other objects. He further stated that many members were desirous of haying some provision giving teachers the right of appeal when they felt themselves aggrieved by any action of the Board in relation to themselves. Mr Beeves admitted that in many case* Boards were hardly to blame. as the? had got themselves into difficulties through demands made t» them by countrr schools. Mr Beeves expressed himself strongly in favor of the classification of salaries. Such an arrangement would make Boards more careful, as they would aot have a fund to cut into. In reply to one of the deputation, the Minister said he had consulted the Law Officers of the Crown, and had ascertained that ho had no power to put a stop to Education Boards charging for teachers' residences. He could onlj intimate to them that such • practice was wrong, as he had done in the case of transferring money from the teachers' fund to the building fund. Mr Beeves also expressed the opinion that there should be legislation introduced in the direction of centralising inspection.
