A Pleasant Prophecy.
NEW ZEALAND TO BE SWALLOWED BY THE PACIFIC. A recent issue of Cassell's Saturday Journal has the following somewhat astuunding information : It wa« formerly, say fifty years ngn, nothing uncommon to see a new island appear above .-r an old oue to disappear b«-nea;h the waves of the Pacific Ocean. Such occurrences were gurnet i me* noted as often a* two or three times a year, and were eo uncommon as to hardly excite comment among navigators and >cientiats. Of late, however, the Pacific has been " pacific indeed. It is thirty- air years »ince the last island disappeared, and exactly a quarter of a century siDce the last new ono popped its head in the " greatest of oceans. ' But geologists argue that this is a j.uspicious silence, as omen of come monstrous cata» strophe; that Dame Nature is simply resting for a mighty effort. Sir Sydney Bell even goes as far as to predict that the whole of New Zealand and greater part of Australia will he engulfed before the end of the year 1925.
